Managing a Class

As teachers, we have many roles. In this chapter they explain to us the role of 'organizer' and 'controller.' One of the most important skills a teacher needs to develop, in order to manage a class is how to grade his own language.
After reading this chapter in our text and the "Commentary" section, please answer the following questions in a comment on this post:
  1. According to the article, why should we limit the amount of students' first language used in the class? When and to what extent is it OK to use it?
  2. What is the difference between useful noise and non-useful noise in a class?
  3. What's the role of gestures in the ELT classroom?
Remember that opinions can not be exactly the same, and if you do not answer every question to the detail, you will not get all the points for your comments.

  1. 1. In order to develop language skills, the exposure of the learner to the target language is a prerequisite, hence using the English language as much as possible is vital. Furthermore, using the students´ first language can send a negative message (e.g. students are incapable to understand English). According to the article, it is OK to use the students´ first language in beginning levels; to reassure learners or for explaining methodology.

    2. Useful noise will come from people speaking the language, students moving around or learners needing to release energy or frustration. Non-useful noise is the one that simply does not serve any purpose of the class, for instance, the noise of students speaking to each other about stuff that has nothing to do with the class.

    3. Gestures are really useful in the ELT classroom; they can support the message teachers try to convey. The lower the language level of the group being taught, the more important gestures become. However, teachers need to be careful when using gestures, so they cannot cause offence to learners.

  2. 1. According to the article, why should we limit the amount of students' first language used in the class? When and to what extent is it OK to use it?
Using too much of the learners' first language can send a negative message, as it implies that the teacher does not trust the learners to understand English. There may be occasions on which a teacher considers it useful to use the learners’ first language, for example to reassure learners, or explain methodology at lower levels. However, even in these circumstances it is probably best to limit the amount of language other than English used.

    2. What is the difference between useful noise and non-useful noise in a class?
Useful noise will come from people speaking the language, students moving around or learners needing to release energy or frustration. Non-useful noise is generated by students who are disturbing, annoying or interfering with the class procedure, as well as the one generated by the learners speaking in their L1. The teacher needs to judge when the noise is serving no useful purpose and try to reduce it.

    3. What's the role of gestures in the ELT classroom?
In the ELT classroom, gestures are typically extremely useful, because they can support the message that you are trying to convey – and communicating successfully with learners is a vital part of language teaching. The lower the language level of the group being taught, the more important gestures become.

  3. 1.- According to the article, why should we limit the amount of students' first language used in class? When and to what extent is it OK to use it?
Because if as teachers we want our students to improve and develop their language skills then it is so important the use of the target language in this case "English" as much as possible, being that they need to be exposed to it, they need to interact with the language they are learning, for that reason we have to avoid and limit the use of the first language. Moreover, the use of fisrt language can send a negative message because it implies that the teacher does not trust in the understanding of the students about the target language; neverthlees, in some cases it use is permitted but, mostly at lower levels.

2.- What is the difference between useful noise and non-useful noise in class?
Useful noise is which come from people speaking the language also it can be a practice and a way to reduce frustration. On the other hand non-useful noise refers to the kind of noise that is useless, and just interrupt the class without any purpose.

3.-What's the role of gestures in the ELT classroom?
Gestures play an important role in ELT classrooms, they help teachers to support what they are saying being a useful resource because it allows a better undersanding of the message that the teacher is trying to transmit.

  4. 1-why should we limit the amount of student´s first language used in the class? When and to what extent is it ok to use it?
-First of all, when talking about the learning of a new language it is crucial to be aware that the more exposed the learners are to the language, the better will be for them to develop language skills, for example English, so if they are exposed to the new language in the class the majority of time, they will be becoming familiar with the language in every lesson. There are certain cases in which the usage of the first language may be permitted up to certain extent and that is when the learners are true beginners which is why the teacher needs to make use of clear and natural instructions, pauses when speaking, complete utterances, gestures, pictures and body language. Another circumstance in which the usage of the first language may be permitted is when the teacher needs to assure that the students understood a complex grammar form, nevertheless it is best to press on using the new language most of the time so that the students are completely engaged in the acquisition of the new language.
2- What is the difference between useful and non-useful noise in the class?
-Useful noise is the output being produced in the class, for instance when the students are performing a speaking task in the new language (English) which purpose is for them to utter, to communicate, to express any specific topic or practice their L2; they can be in pairs and groups so when listening to this noise there is no need to be worry about it, whereas non-useful noise is the one shown when the students cannot be necessarily performing a task in the new language; instead, using their L1 wandering around pointlessly distracting the others, in such cases the teacher needs to manage this and be able to recognize between useful and non-useful noise in order to reduce to the least.
3-What is the role of gestures in the ELT classroom?
-Gestures are really important in the ELT classroom for it leads to a better understanding when the students do not get to completely understand what the teachers is saying, then gestures, body movements and any other technique related to this can support the message the teacher bears in what s/he says to the students. Most of the time this technique is used when the students are beginners, thus the lower the language level of the group is, the more important gestures become. However, there is an aspect to be taken into consideration when it comes to make use of gestures, and that is “culture”. The teacher needs to know their students, where they come from, their culture, their beliefs and so on in order for them not to be offended with any gestures the teacher makes use of. To sum up, using gestures is crucial to transmit complete messages when the students are just undertaking the learning of a new language (English), it can, of course, vary from one culture to another.

  7. . It is important because the student needs to be exposed to the language that they are learning that is a prerequisite to developing language. Algo using English as much as possible is essential to learn in a better way the language. Using too much of the learners' first language can send a negative message. We as a teacher have to use the learners' first language just to reassure learners or explain methodology at lower leves.

    2. Useful noise come from People speaking the language when they are working in groups or in pairs. non-Useful noise come from People talking in their native language and doing the opposite assigned by the teacher.

    3. The role of gestures in the ELT classroom. gestures are a natural part of face to face communication, but the use of gestures may vary from culture to culture. gestures are useful in the ELT classroom because they can support the message that teacher is trying to convey.

  8. 1. The article explains that to develop language skills we need to be exposure to the language therefore to use as much English as possible in the classroom is very necessary. Since this point of view, using too much native language could be harm in the learning process of the students. When teacher´s don´t trust the understanding of the students, they use a lot of native language these could send a negative message to the learners. In the beginners levels sometimes is useful to reassure learners and explain methodology in the learner´s first language but the teachers should try to adjust the ESL in an easy way to understand but it has to be as natural and that students could understand the overall of the message.

    2. Useful noise will come from people speaking the target language, students moving around or learners needing to release energy or frustration and non-useful noise will be the one that does not help you accomplish the objective of the class. However, the teacher has to judge when it is useful noise or when not so you reduce in the classroom.

    3. They support the message that you are trying to send in the classroom. The gesture are important during the process of communication since we use a lot of non-verbal face-to-face interaction while talking. In the ELT classroom, they could be a tool for the students to understand the overall message or instruction we want to reach with them.

  9. 1. According to the article, why should we limit the amount of students' first language used in the class? When and to what extent is it OK to use it?
R//. Because learners need to be exposed to the target language to increase their abilities. Moreover, to develop language skills is exposure to the language, and therefore using English as much as possible is essential. Using to much of the learners’ first language can send a negative message because it seems that the teacher thinks that students do not understand the target language. However, using the first language in the class is not bad at all. According to the article, it is OK using it in lower levels, to reasure or explain methodology to the students.

    2. What is the difference between useful noise and non-useful noise in a class?
R//. Useful noise is when students speak around the class, but using the target language in order to improve their English, They will have to do some speaking, because is the students only speak to the teacher they will not get enough practice. On the other hand, non- useful noise is when students speak without using the target language. The teacher has to reduce this kind of noise.

    3. What's the role of gestures in the ELT classroom?
R//. The role of gesture is to support teacher’s message to be very understandable by the students. Gestures are very useful in lower levels ESL classes. Moreover, gestures will be able to facilitate communication, understanding and participation. Additionally, your students will therefore be more engaged and more likely to retain what they’re being taught in the classroom.

  10. $- If our principal aim as teachers is our students to develop as much as possible the target language ( English) is extremely important to ask them, to practice it most of the time, because the more you practice the more accurate and fluent you become.Nevertheless, we can not ban them to use their mother tongue but, just as a resource. Because sometimes, is so difficult for them to get the clear message of a topic so,we most be flexible in these situations. Remember we are working with human beings.

$- Useful noise, is this coming from our students' output ( dialogues, oral presentations, opinions, comments, etc.) and of course is useful and meaningful to the class, however there is also non-useful noise for example shouts, or students' interruptions with these matters that are not related to the class' topic, and obviously they don't serve any benefit to the class.

$- Gestures support teachers at the time of explanations, giving a message, explaining a topic or giving instructions. They are also useful because, allow the teachers' creativity. However, to abuse their use shall also confused and distract our students; so we most be careful.

according to material the teacher should remember that one of the main prerequisites to developing language skill is exposure the students to it, and therefore using English as much as posible is essential. if as a teacher we use the native language to much, we could send a neative message to the estudents , it can implies that we don't trust learner to understand English. On the other hand there may be some occasion on whicha teacher considers the use of learner's first language useful, for example to reassure learners, or explain methodology at lower levels.but is important to limit the amount of language other than English used.

    2. What is the difference between useful noise and non-useful noise in a class?
the difference between this two noises is that when students are speaking each other and they are doing it in English, they are practicing the language since if the students only speak with the teacher they won't get enough practice, Therefore useful noise will come from people speakin the language, students moving oround or learners needing to release energy or frustation.

  12. 1. - According to the article, why should we limit the amount of students’ fist language in the classroom?
    It should be because:
--Native English speaker teacher may not know the language of their learners well enough to make use of that language.
--Many classes may be made up of learners from different countries, which makes it impossible to use any language other than English.
--Also, to developing language skills is exposure to the language: use English as much is possible is the best to students.

When and to what extent is it OK to use it?
    The reading presents three reasons:
    --to reassure learners.
--to explain methodology at lower levels.
--to avoid that learners become confused and demotivated when they do not understand.
    2. - What’s the difference between useful noise and non-useful noise in a class?
The difference between useful noise and non-useful noise is that the first one is done to achieve a goal which is that students develop the ability to speak efficiently in English, and the second form of noise has no purpose only is to release energy or frustration, causing disorder within the classroom and a desperate teacher.
3.-what’s the role of gestures in the ELT classroom?

  17. 1.According to the article, one of the most important skills a teacher needs to develop is how to grade their own language. Using too much of the L1 can send such a negative message, as it implies that the teacher does not trust the learners to understand English. However, there may be occasions on which a teacher considers it useful to use the learners’ L1. For example, when students are trying to say something but having difficulty, they can say it in their own language and the teacher can reformulate it for them, to show they could have expressed themselves within their L1. But, the best is to limit the amount of language other than English used. (EFL & ESL classes).

    2. In a Teacher-Centered based class you will find a very quiet class. A Student-Centered based class, in contrast, will often be noisy and busy. Classrooms cannot always be quiet and in EFL classes, students need to practice their language, use their vocabulary, etc. Teacher needs to judge when the noise is serving no useful purpose and apply some class management and discipline strategies in order to reduce it. It is important that teachers set reasonable limits since the begginning. Such as, not acceptable to talk when giving instructions or lecturing, talk during a test or other quiet activities. The difference between these two kind of noises is that when students are willing to produce useful noise, it means that they are producing (speaking) using their L2. With this intention, you créate a dynamic class in which students are allowed to participate, express their points of views, show their previous knowledge, questioning, etc. Different from non-useful noise, that has no academic purpose and disturbs the developing of a lesson.

    3. Gesture is a movement of part of the body, especially a hand or the head, to express an idea or meaning. For instance, gestures are a natural part of communication and an useful tool to EFL and ESL teachers/classes. Additionally, it’ll help the learners acquire new vocabulary as it leads your L2 learners to associate body movements or gestures with particular phrases, drills and instructions.

Nevertheless, it is important for teachers, to take into account that some countries use more gestures and expressions than others. If a gesture is used inappropiately or incorrectly, this could be interpreted in a wrong way. With this in mind, the correct way of gesture usage in class, will help the students to communicate better. No matter which level of English you're teaching.

  18. According to the article, why should we limit the amount of students' first language used in the class? When and to what extent is it OK to use it?
The teacher's objective is to promote students to  communicate in the target language and our Job is to get them produce the language as far as possible. The use of their first language could be a problem during their learning process because they need to be focus on the language they are learning. Moreover we need to be flexible and to understand that not all the students are able to produce the language in the way that we want.

What is the difference between useful noise and non-useful noise in a class?
An useful noise occurs in the classroom when students communicate in the target language( English) they improve their speaking skill by practicing not only with the teacher but also with classmates during the whole class as the opposite an non-useful noise does not increase the learning process in srudents by using an non-useful noise students can not communicate in the target language.

What's the role of gestures in the ELT classroom?
Students are able to  reproduce gesture while repeating words, by using gestures students can memorize even better than using pictures, the role of gesture in the ELT is to help students understand better the topic and learn new vocabulary.

  19. 1. If our main goal is to make students learn the target language(English) we must to exposure them to the language as much as possible in order to make them acquire it perfectly. However, we have to understand that at lower levels learners can find it difficult to understand and for that reason there may be occasions on which a teacher considers it useful to use the learners' first language for example to reassure the learners or explain methodology.

    2. Useful noise will come from people practicing the target language for example group discussions, presentations ect.
Non-useful noises are those that not have a purpose in the classroom and they only disturb the class. Teachers have to be careful about this and know haw to identify those kind of noises.

    3. Gestures are a natural part of a face to face communication. They are extremely useful in the ELT classroom because they can support the message that we are trying to communicate and through gestures we can make students understand the topic better.

  20. 1. Why should we limit the amount of students' first language used in the class?
R/ Remember as teachers the aim to develop language skill is exposure students to the language, using English as much as possible is essential. If as teacher speak in our native language won't let them (students) the opportunity to advance, practice and produce the target language. There may be occasions on which a teacher consider it useful to use the learners' first language, but I think he or she must appeals that as a last resource.

    2. What is the difference between useful noise and non-useful noise in a class?

According to the article teachers should limit the amount of students’ first language used in the class because using English is one of the main prerequisites to develop language skills. In that way students are exposed to the language. Teachers are models in the class, and sometimes it is the direct contact between learners and target language. Also, using too much of the learners’ first language can send a negative message, as if the teacher thinks that students are not able to understand English. Although, teachers can use of the learners’ first language in different circumstances for example at lower levels they have to be careful.

    2. What is the difference between useful noise and non-useful noise in a class?
Useful noise will come from learners speaking the target language because it means they are improving their oral production (output) and also they are getting used to speak in the language. On the other hand, non-useful noise refers to the kind of noise that is not meaningful for students when they are speaking in their L1 and it does not have a useful purpose to improve their target language.
