Pronunciation is something that concerns teachers at every level. There are many different points of view regarding the teaching of pronunciation.
In this entry, you will answer the following questions in your own words, based on what you read on Chapter 7 - "Teaching Pronunciation."
- Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
- Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation.
- Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
- Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.
Remember that opinions can not be exactly the same.
1. Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
ResponderBorrarAccording to what chapter 7 (Teaching Pronunciation) says, if learners choose to attend a language course it seems reasonable to assume that they expect to be taught (how to pronounce) rather than left to pick up things for themselves. We have to keep in mind that pronouncing correctly will help promote comprehension, so we as teachers are supposed to teach the correct pronunciation of words and sentences in the target language. Leaving students to pick up the language on their own can become into a problem, as they might learn things in the wrong way, and the next horrible task for the teacher will be to help this student to unlearn the wrong pronunciation and change it for the correct or appropriate one.
2. Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation.
1. It gives a very good impression when you speak to new people. It is the very first thing that people notice when you are speaking. Also, a good pronunciation will increase the motivation and self-esteem, and this way enhance the learning process of the language.
2. It helps enhance comprehension. This is possibly the biggest benefit of pronouncing well. We have to consider that even if the use of grammar is correct, a terrible pronunciation causes people to simply not understand what you want to say. Also words like ‘sleep’ and ‘slip’ might be troublesome to understand if not well pronounced.
3. A good pronunciation of sentences will deliver the correct meaning. We have to keep in mind that using the correct stress, intonation and rhythm is important to deliver a message appropriately, otherwise it will cause problems to the listener and might end up in a misunderstanding of the idea, or worst, in non-understanding at all.
3. Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
1. It is difficult to understand for the listener. If a learner has a poor pronunciation, s/he will pronounce words in different ways, which are not appropriate or correct, driving comprehension to fail.
2. Learner’s self-esteem might decrease. His/her motivation can be affected and his/her willingness to learn as well.
3. It can have an impact on the person’s listening skills. They might not be able to understand well, if they don’t have good pronunciation. For instance, they might ‘stupidly’ confuse words like ‘right’ and ‘write’, ‘two’ and ‘too’, ‘dear’ and ‘deer’, and so on.
4. Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.
- Elision is the omission of one or more sounds in a word or phrase. Example:
‘I feel very comfortable in this armchair.’ – the /or/ is missed out.
- Coalescence is a form of assimilation – it is a phenomenon which takes place when /j/ is preceded by certain consonants most commonly /t/ and /d/. Example:
‘What you need…. / wɒtʃu ni:d /’
- Assimilation is the process by which a speech sound becomes similar or identical to a neighboring sound. Example:
‘I really love this_shiny one over here. - /s/ can assimilate to / / before /’
1.-Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
ResponderBorrarA: Some students pick up the ability to pronounce words and phrases accurately without having to be taught. However, in other cases there are students that expect pronuciation as part of the teaching-learning process.
According to chapter 7 it depends on the degree that the teacher gives to pronunciation teaching and it will also depends on the students' need. So, based on that, this would be a good reason to teach prununciation being included in some lesson plans because it helps students to increase and improve their comprehension about the language.
2.-Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation?
A: 1. Students how are aware that their pronunciation is quite good may grow in confidence and then perform better in other aspects of speaking, such as improving their fluency.
2. Good pronunciation helps to make differences between sounds and avoiding comprehension misunderstandings.
3. Through good pronunciation the communicative ability can be improved.
3- Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation?
A: 1. Poor pronunciation can impide communication very quickly.
2. The innacurate pronunciation of a phoneme can lead a misunderstanding.
3. It can be frustrating for the learner, having less confidence and feeling shy and do no able to speak.
4.-Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.
A: -Elision: Describes the dissapereance of a sound. e.g. We arrived the nexT_Day. (/t/ elided between /ks/ and /d/)
-Coalescence: is the joint of features from two or more segments into a single segment. e.g. Would you like to go to the party with me? (When a /d/ sound is followed by a /j/ sound, they often blend to form a /dƷ/ sound.)
-Assimilation: Describes how sound modify each other when they meet. e.g. Can you see thaT_Girl over there? (/k/ assimilates to /t/).
1. In my opinion, it all depends of the learners’ specific situation and the environment that is around them. If the students are in constant interaction with the target language in and out of the classroom, perhaps there is no need to teach pronunciation that directly. However, as it happens in most of the language courses, students are not immersed in the language they study, so they cannot copy or simply pick up the rhythm, pronunciation and other intonational devices. Teaching pronunciation can be of great benefit, such as students being aware of the pronunciation patterns of the language and the problems they have with certain words. This awareness sequentially would lead to students´ better performance in the second language.
ResponderBorrar2
2.1 Good pronunciation can increase the students´ confidence to use the target language, as he/she does not feel really reluctant due to his/her proficiency in the oral production.
2.2 It can give students that sense of belonging to the community that speaks the language.
2.3 The message that the speaker wants to convey can get across more easily, without repetitions and frustration.
3
3.1 It can lead to misunderstandings of the message, or not understanding at all.
3.2 Students usually prefer keeping quiet rather than speaking because they think they will be judge or made fun of.
3.3 Usually, people make the wrong relation between intelligence and pronunciation, hence students with a bad pronunciation might encounter some problems when seeking a job or in the daily basis.
4.-Elision: the omission of a sound or syllable when speaking. For instance, the dropping of the letter ¨b¨ in the words ¨doubt¨ and ¨climber¨.
-Coalescence: When a /t/ sound is followed by a /j/ sound, they often blend to form a /ʈʃ/ sound. For instance, in the sentence ¨What you need¨, the ¨t¨ and the ¨j¨ sounds are joined and pronounced as a single phoneme.
-Assimilation: the process by which a speech sound becomes similar or identical to a neighboring sound. For instance, the phrase ¨ten mice¨ /tem mais/, where the /n/ sound was changed to /m/, so it is now identical with the /m/ which influenced it.
1. we can think that learners Will simple pick up an ability to pronounce phrases accurately without having to be taught. pronunciation Will be learned during the process of learning by hearing to others and teacher can correct to students when they pronounce a Word or phrase incorrectly.
ResponderBorrar2. students may grow in confidence and then perform better in other aspects of speaking, such as maintaining fluency.
students are able to communicate well with People from diverses countries.
Having good pronunciation simply opens you to huge oportunities to meet potential employers.
3. poor pronunciation can impede communication very quickly.
when you have poor pronunciation is hard to understand what you are trying to say.
having poor pronunciation native speaker Will think of you as a bad English speaker and your good grammar and vocabulary can not help you.
4. Elision: may refer to the omission of an unstressed vowel, consonant or syllable.
example:
Angels we have heard on high sweetly singing o'er the plains.
coalescence: the merging of two or more phonological segments into one.
example:
if a person has a business phone, use the business phone number.
assimilation: is a general term in phonetics for the process by which a speech sound becomes similar or identical to a neighboring sound.
example:
that sheep is so expensive. (ship)

ResponderBorrar1. Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
ResponderBorrarR//. Yes, we should. Because, when teaching any language as a foreign or second language, our first goal for our students is basic communication, and it can not happen if no one can understand what they are saying. So, as teachers we need to helping students to understand and become familiar with the phonemic chart, we are giving them an indispensable tool in helping to make their communication intelligible. According to the book, students pick up the ability to pronunce words and phrases accurately when they are expose to a lot of natural language. But if our students are not expose to the natural language we need to teach them pronunciation in orden to develop confidence in their target language.
2. Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation.
-The first impression is extremely important when you speak with new people.
-People will know straight away your professional level by listening to the way you pronounce English words.
-Good pronunciation developes confidence and fluency.
3. Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
-Listeners find bad pronunciation unpleasant and hard to understand.
-Poor English pronunciation can affect the chances of getting a promotion or better job opportunities.
-Poor pronunciation limit yourself to develop fluency.
4. Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.
Elision
Is the omission of one or more sounds (such as a vowel, a consonant, or a whole syllable) in a word or phrase. Sometimes sounds are elided to make a word easier to pronounce. For example the contractions: isn't (is not), I'll (I shall/will), who's (who is/has), we see from these examples that vowels or/and consonants can be elided.
Coalescence
Is the merger of features from two or more segments into a single segment. For example: When a /t/ sound is followed by a / j / sound, they often blend to form a /tʃ/. e.g. Don’t you just love…?
Assimilation
Is a common phonological process by which the phonetics of a speech segment becomes more like another segment in a word. In other words it’s when a letter (sound) is influenced by the letter (sound) before or after it so that it changes its sound and/or spelling. For example: “don’t be silly” where the /n/ and /t/ are assimilated to /m/ by the following /b/, in many accents the natural sound is “dombe silly”.
The pronunciation is important as teachers we have the responsibility to teach our students to speak correctly a language that is not their own with the purpose of having effective communication, self-confidence and a dignified acceptance in society. It should be a priority activity with students that will help them to develop skills in language learning. I do not believe that the student can have a proper pronunciation if he is not exposed to the language. “It is important for ESL and EFL teachers to understand the correspondences between English phonology and English orthography so that they can teach their learners,1. How to predict the pronunciation of a word given its spelling and, 2) how to come up with plausible spelling for a word given its pronunciation”.
ResponderBorraradvantages related to the pronunciation:1) to give a good impression in front of new people.2) a efficient communication.3) self-confidence and 4) excellent opportunities. Disadvantages: Negative impression: If students have a poor pronunciation with very strong foreign accent. Misunderstanding, students cannot pronounce the words correctly and no one can understand the words. Ineffective communication; difficult to understand them.
An elision is the removal of an unstressed syllable, consonants, or letters from a word or phrase to decrease the number of letters or syllables in order to mix words together. The missing letter is replaced by an apostrophe. Generally, the middle or end letter or syllable is eliminated or two words are blended together and an apostrophe is inserted. The difference between Contraction and Elision. Contraction is the combination of two words to form a shorter word,“can’t” is a contraction of can+ not. Elision is a specific term. It is the omission of sounds, syllables, or phrases and replacing it with an apostrophe, “ne’er” is elided form of “never” and similarly, “gonna” is an elision of the phrase “going to. Elision is common in casual conversation. Elisions are often found in prose and poetry with the objective to continue a regular meter or to create flow in iambic pentameter. Since a specific meter is required, elision is employed to achieve the set number of syllables necessary to create flow in a piece.Examples of Elision from Literature:What dire offence from am’rous causes springs,This, ev’n Belinda may vouchsafe to view…O say what stranger cause, yet unexplor’d,Could make a gentle belle reject a lord…..In this extract, Pope has elided several words such as amorous which is elided into “am’rous”, eveninto “ev’n”, unexplored into “unexplor’d”, and similarly, through and opened are also shortened to maintain regular pentameter.
Assimilation is a general term in phonetics for the process by which a speech sound becomes similar or identical to a neighboring sound. Is the influence of a sound on a neighboring sound so that the two become similar or the same. In rapid speech native speakers of English tend to pronounce ten bucks as though it were written tembucks, and in anticipation of the voiceless. Features of adjacent sounds may combine so that one of the sounds may not be pronounced. The nasal feature of the mn combination in hymn results in the loss of /n/in this word. The alveolar production of nt in a word such as winter may result in the loss of /t/ to produce a word that sounds like winner.
Coalescence: Michael Key describes coalescence as a “process by which two input segments are merged into a single output segment that is distinct in at least one feature from the segments to which it corresponds” (2008). It is the fusion of two different sounds. For examples/z/and/j/ occasion, measure. Another example of coalescence is what can be called “yod coalescence”. It is common in colloquial speech. This occur in unstressed syllables in many varieties of English, for example: education, nature. The yod coalescence phenomenon takes place when /j/ is preceded by certain consonants, most commonly /t/ and /d/./t/+/j/=tS, ex.what do you need?-the ball that you brought./d/+/j/=dʒ;could you help me?,what you need is a good job
1.~ It is necessary to teach pronunciation, because most of the time learners will find problems at the time they read o speak; the only matter we most care is to not teach it isolated, is much better when we include activities in our lessons related with pronunciation, in that way students will learn it spontaneously rather than being frustrated because of the accurate pronunciation of a word or phrase. Remember that motivation is the key factor

Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
ResponderBorrarAs teachers we are responsible for our student’s needs, so in order to this yes, we should teach pronunciation , it is the way in which communicative process will occur fast, also we can motivate our students to continue learning pronunciation even outside the class.
Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation.
*Be able to give clear information
* your listening ability improves
* More confidence is gained
Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
* Create misunderstandings.
* If learner doesn't practice their fluency and pronunciation then their speaking will be slow.
*There may occur that learner does not feel comfortable to speak, and also they may feel scare about their pronunciation.
Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.
*Elision it is when we pronounce a word but we do not pronounce every sound in it e.g. Have no - haven't Can not - can't
*Coalescense it is when we came with just one sound where there were two different sounds e.g would you, could you, should you
*Assimilation it is the process by which one sound become more like a nearby sound e.g. climb, lamb.
1-Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
ResponderBorrar-We should teach pronunciation, it all starts since the first moment in which we speak, we produce utterances, or better said “understandable utterances” to the students. Our role is very important when teaching this specific feature of language, though it can be a bit tedious, we have to do it for our learners to become more aware of what they speak and listen to; using all the possible and suitable strategies to encourage understandable pronunciation, up to certain extant we can leave our students to explore by themselves some other implications of pronunciation.
2-three advantages of a good pronunciation
-it helps to shape the students’ pronunciation since they follow an understandable and natural pronunciation pattern therefore they will understand and be understandable.
-Confidence grows up as long as good pronunciation exists hence students perform better in other aspects of speaking such as fluency.
-It´s more likely for students to understand when an utterance is a statement or a question, though there is no understanding on each word, they can infer its meaning through the intonation place on the utterance as intonation is part of a good pronunciation.
3-Three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation
-Misunderstandings and non-understandings can occur
-it can impede a natural flow of the stream of a conversation
-The students are not exposed to a natural pitch and speech; thus they will have trouble when trying to understand others´ speech.
4- Elision means sounds that are missed out altogether. Elision is a common phenomenon where three consonants come together and the one that goes in the middle is dropped, for example in the words “Humpty” and “Dumpty” the phoneme /p/ is missed out.
-Coalescence refers to the phonemes that blend to form another, for example when a /t/ sound is followed by a /j/ sound, they become into a /tʃ/ sound, like in: don’t you just love…? Another example can be when the /d/ sound is followed by a /j/ sound, they become into a /dƷ/ sound, like in: Did you hear what he said to her?
-Assimilation has to do with, for instance, those consonants using the alveolar ridge that sometimes change in connected speech, like in: “whiteboard” produced as “wipeboard” for the /b/ morpheme which follows changes what would have been an alveolar sound.
1. Of course yes. We should teach pronunciation, thought teaching english pronounciation is an area of language teaching that many teachers avoid. But students expect help from teachers and we must be careful on this Aspect because we act as a "Model" and if we have pronunciation mistakes our students are going to carry with the same pronunciation errors.
ResponderBorrar2. Advantages:
~ Improve their speaking skills.
~it will be more easy to express themselves.
~the comprehension is better.
Disadvantages:
~Learner frustration when they perceive their pronounciation is poor.
~Cannot communicate with others.
~always being misunderstood.
3.Elision:
Is the omission of one or more sounds such as vowel, consonant,or a whole syllable in a word. Example: have not-Haven't
Coalescene:
Subtitution of a phoneme that is different from thetñ two adjacent phonemes yet takes on features of the target. Example: "Foke" for smoke or "lath" for last.
Assimilation:
Refers to when a sound starts to sound like surrounding sound. Example: "Beb" for bed/ "gank" for thank.
1. Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
ResponderBorrarIn my opinion we leave learners to pick up in the beggin of the course and them we need to reinforce their pronunciation practicing in class through speech in order to improve the pronumciation in the learners
2. Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation.
- Develop the comprehsion the other people can understand what we are talking about.
- we develop our accuracy and also our fluency
- A good pronunciation increase our self motivation
3. Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
- have diffulty in the comprehsion when you are listening
-lack of fluency and accuracy
- Decrease the self motivacion
4. Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.
-Elision: it's the omission of a sound in speech
Because but we said 'cause or also 'cuz
-Coalescence: is when a (t) sound is followed by a (j) sound, they often blend to form a (tʃ) sound.
What did you buy?
Did you miss me?
-Assimilation: is a common phonological process by which the sound of the ending of one word blends into the sound of the beginning of the following word.
"Hot potato" the (t) in 'hot' is blend into the (p) in potato
1. Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
ResponderBorrarAlthough there are many teacher that treat to avoid to teach pronunciation, for the students, not being able to pronounce words properly can affect their communication, especially since it is believed that, learners who are unable to pronounce words are also unable to understand them, and although many students have the ability to pronounce English accurately without having to be taught, the mayority of them need the teacher's help. This means that teaching pronunciation is an important area which should be dealt carefully.
2. Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation.
*Good pronunciation skill can give students more self confidence when they speak in front of many people.
*Good pronunciation is important to avoid misunderstanding, since that in many cases of misunderstanding in communication were caused by the mispronouncing of words or the improper intonation.
* the students can inprove social interaction.
3. Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
* If the learner have a poor pronunciation can have very strong foreign accent.
*if the student cannot pronounce words correctly no one can understand the words that you are trying to use and it can lead to some serious misunderstanding .
* People can avoid to speak with the students with poor pronunciation and it can be frustrating for them.
4. Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.
*ELISION: Is the omission of a sound (a phoneme) in speech. Example
'I don't know' /I duno/ , /kamra/ for camera,
*COALESCENCE: When a /t/ sound is followed by a /j/ sound, they often blend to form a /ʈʃ/ sound. Example: promised yesterday.
* ASSIMILATION: A common phonological process by which the sound of the ending of one word blends into the sound of the beginning of the following word Example: Nice to meet you ( meet + you /mi:t ju:/ = /mi:tʃu:/)
1. The concept of pronunciation is the sounds of the language they may not correspond to the exactly sounds that leaners will typically find as individual sounds since English is a stress language they need recognize where the stress in an sentence can affect the meaning when the voice moves up or down (intonation). Our students have to understand the pronunciation used by others, they need to recognize and interpret intonation patterns. As teachers, we need to teach both receptive and productive aspects of pronunciation to improve the communication quickly between our students and with us.
ResponderBorrar2. The first one, we need to give lots of exposure to the natural spoken English before expect our students to spoke themselves. The second one is help the learners to hear differences before producing the differences by their own. The third one is that we use the language for communication so the more practice the students have more confidence will be when they produce the role of the teacher is to correct the mistakes so they improve in the pronunciation.
3. Disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
a. The pronunciation features are transitory so just hearing them with a poor knowledge of pronunciation may be hard to students to difference them this may cause no understanding in the communication.
b. As teachers if we have poor pronunciation we can confuse our students and don´t transmit the confidence our students need, for example if we sue many word in the mother language they may think that the target language is very difficult.
c. Produce lack of confidence in the learners this can develop on not a consciousness of their pronunciation.
4. Elision: is the loss of a phoneme, it means the loss of a sound in the middle of a consonant group, sometimes from the middle of a word.
Example:
Left back
Stand by
Looked back
I must go
Coalescence: is when a /t/ sound is follow by a /j/ sound, they often blend to forma /tS/ sound.
Example:
What you need?
Last year
You told me that you had your homework done.
She didn´t go to vacations that year.
Assimilation: when the sound at the end of one word changes to make it easier to say the next word.
Example:
In Bath
Hyde Park
Tem boys
1.R//= According with chaper 7 Teaching pronunciation. One important points is that "Students will probably end up copying what their hear." So I think that students will get the pronunciation that they hear and with a that they are involved every single day! Also its depends on their environment. If students are involved in nature English speaking as a common language, they will get a clearly and good pronunciation without any other help.
ResponderBorrar2.Advantages:
• The most important! Nowadays Better opportunities to get a job and travel to other countries.
• You can read phonemic symbols, that are so useful in order to transcribe sounds and make differences between them.
• It's important to use the correct stress, intonation and rhythm to deliver a clear message.
3. Disadvantages:
• Your speech will not able to understanding.
• With poor pronunciation you will not able to communicate in a clearly and faster way.
• Also can affect yourself in order to get a job and demostrarte your habilities.
4. Elision: is the omission of sound, syllabus or words in speech. Example: I don't know /I dunno/. Camera /karma/.
•Assimilation Is the process in which two or more sound become more similar to each other. Example= Ten men / Temmem/.
• Coalescence: Is a process whereby two separate speech sounds merge to form a single new.
1. Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
ResponderBorrarI think that as teachers we should teach pronunciation because pronunciation it is a fundamental part of the communication process but at the same time is good that the students pick it up by themselves because they develop the communication ability and fluency in a natural way. But it is going to depend on what are our priorities as a teacher, to become they accurate or to develop communication abilities.
2. Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation.
1. The communication ability is important because it is going to be a good process of understanding
2. A good pronunciation makes you feel more confidence.
3. A natural rhythm, the speaking is going to sound more natural.
3. Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
1. Misunderstanding
2. Poor communication process
3. Lack of confidence
4. Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.
-Elision: is the omission of one or more sounds (such as a vowel, a consonant, or a whole syllable) in a word or phrase. Sometimes sounds are elided to make a word easier to pronounce
e.g. Humpy dumpy sat on a wall…. The /p/ is often missed out.
-Coalescence: the merging of two or more phonological segments into one.
e.g. when a /t/ sound is follow by a /j/ sound, they often blend to form a /ts/ sound. Don’t you just love?
-Assimilation: is a common phonological process by which one sound becomes more like a nearby sound.
e.g. (whiteboard) may be produced as (Wipeboard)
1. Mastering grammar, having a good knowledge of vocabulary, being able to read and write well are all part of language learning. However, not being able to pronounce words extremely impedes communication. In other words, teaching pronunciation is an important area which should be dealt with regularly and not leave students to pick it up for themselves because it may be a problem in their life communication.
ResponderBorrar2. We communicate more easily in day-to-day life.
It increases career opportunities.
It improves our professional image.
3. People may simply not understand what we want to say.
people will avoid communicating with us as much as they can.
It affects us to get job opportunities.
4. Elision is the term for leaving out letter in a word in order to form a shorter word replacing it with an apostrophe.
ne'er= never
Gonna= going to
Coalescence when a /t/sound is preceded by a /j/ sound they blend to form a /tS/ sound for example what you need?
last year
when a /d/ sound is preceded by a /j/ sound they blend to form /d3/ sound example could you help me?
Assimilation results from a sound becoming more like another nearby sound in terms of one or more of its phonetic characteristics example vancouver and banff
Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
ResponderBorrarI believe its a combination of both. Our aim is for students to develop communicative skills meaning that they should be able to communicate in the target language effectively. That requires two different component:
1. Listening skills- learners need to recognize, interpret and understand the pronunciation used by others in order to listen effectively and respond correctly to it. This may be done by "picking up" the language and different pronunciations as they interact with others whether they are native or non-native speakers, they need to understand what they hear.
2. Speaking skills- as a result of the previous objective, learners need to learn the correct pronunciation and the components related to it such as stress in order to convey an undertandable message. For that matter they need a model to practice.
So it becomes a matter of combining the two ways of learning pronunciation as long as they accomplish effective commnunicative skills.
Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation.
1. Learners develop confidence therefore they are able to perform better at commnunicating the language.
2. Learners are able to gain fluency in speaking the language.
3. People will have a better impression of yourself if you are able to speak the language correctly.
Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
1. Most of the time learners will have to constantly repeat whay they are trying to say therefore the meaning of the message tends to get lost.
2. Learners with bad pronunciation have lower self-esteem and often avoid speaking in public.
3. It is possible to case a negative impression on other language speakers.
Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.
Elision- is the omission of one or more sounds in a word or phrase, often described as "muted" sounds.
Ex: aptly (elided-/t/) glands (elided-/d/)
Coalescence- is the merging of two or more phonological segments into one.
Ex: this year ( ending sound /s/ with beginning sound /j/ merge into sound sh [dont have symbol for it] )
Assimilation- is the fact of a sound being made more like another in the same or next word.
Ex: sandwhich ( nasal sound /n/ assimilates bilabial sound /w/ and changes it into an /m/ sounding samwich)
1.As teachers we must guide the learners to produce the correct sounds. Neverteheless, learners will probably end up copying what they hear from their teachers or native speakers as well. But we definitely have to correct our learners, in the way of helping them to improve their pronunciation.
ResponderBorrarUseful tips on teaching pronunciation:
-give lots of exposure to the target language
- help learners to hear differences before producing them.
-make pronunciation teaching visual where posible
-give lots of practice
-use (sensitive) correction.
2.Advantages of good pronunciation in the learners:
a.Become easily intelligible by speaking with a reasonably natural rhtyhm.
b.Grows self confidence.
c.Perfoms better in other aspects of speaking ( fluency and accuracy).
3.Disadvantades of bad pronunciation:
•Lack of self confidence.
•Affects the communicative features of fluency and accuracy.
•Produces an ineffective communication.
•It leads to some serious misunderstanding.
4. Elision: Sometimes sounds are missed out altogether. For example, stand by. The last phoneme is lost.
Coalescence: When a /d/ sound is followed by a /j/ sound, they often blend to form a /dᶾ/ sound. For example:
Did you say that?
Assimilation: Those consonants formed using the alveolar ridge just behind the top front teeth. For example, last year. Notice that the last sound /t/ becomes /tᶴ/. It causes a change in the neighbouring word.

It depends on how exposed our students are to the language. Because in some particular cases students are exposed to the language and they can pick up an ability to pronounce words and phrases accurately without having to be taught. On the other hand, if we want to achieve accuracy in our students is so important teaching pronunciation and if students choose to attend a language class is because they expect pronunciation to be taught.
